Sr. Brand Designer • 2022-2023

Toucan, a contextual language learning Chrome extension, aimed to enhance its offerings to provide more value to subscribers and increase user engagement. I collaborated with the Product Design, Research, and Engineering teams to develop a series of small courses for their platform.

The brand itself had a very academic feel and wanted to convey more wonder, whimsy, and emotional depth. This project sought to explore the aspirational moments for learners and users that Toucan felt were missing.

Using the existing Toucan branding color palette proved limiting in achieving the desired emotional and whimsical approach due to its darker tones.

My solution was to adopt a free-floating, subject-aligned approach to the illustrations. I utilized a style characterized by organic lines and shapes, aiming to soften the illustration style further.

As a result, the product design and engineering teams successfully launched two cohesive and branded product features that included a library of icons and corresponding header image components. Additionally, the marketing team was equipped with product assets that clearly communicated the features in context.
