The Dave brand relied heavily on illustration to bridge the gap between its mascot and its product experience. Unfortunately, not all product designers are illustrators or even visual designers. As the app expanded its offerings, designers frequently needed illustrations, but the ratio of product designers to brand designers and illustrators were 4:1.
My role mainly involved Art Direction and aiding in the production of a library of illustrations for Product Designers to use in new product features to ensure brand recognition and cohesion. After meeting with our leads to understand the product need, I would sketch ideas and construct briefs to contextualize our illustrator who was based in Russia. I would then review with the immediate stakeholders, the Head of Design & Design Director. Once approved I would help implement the illustrations into the Design System, creating an inventory of new brand illustrations and elements for componentizing into the new Figma asset library.
Stakeholders were able to move quickly on iterations, now that assets were available to them more immediately. This also significantly improved communication and planning for product marketing, fostering a more cohesive approach across the organization. And of course, improving the product and product design experience.
