Creature Learning is a learning design studio that has been around since 2016. The Creature Learning brand was created to capture the spirit of the studio — learning as human at every stage of our evolution. With its playful hand drawn elements, it was built well.
Though their mission was to connect with learners at their most vulnerable, the brand, well designed as it was, had been used in a way that made a lot of their communications and supporting content and materials inaccessible.
My aim was to make an update to the creative asset brand system that could evolve and not “break” when non-visual designers used, it ensuring confidence and clarity to potential and existing clients.
The existing asset library and logo were fine, but needed supporting elements that helped elevate them visually.
Graphic Assets: the graphic elements were mainly being used as small accents. While they added the “human hand” to the brand, I felt they lacked a strong visual connection to the contexts they were being used in.
I introduced a library of “vintage” textbook illustrations and diagrams from various library books on the natural world.
The addition of these new elements allowed for the existing elements to be expand in scale as the scientific illustrations became visual accents.
Color Palette: I simplified the color palette using the elemental environment of so many creatures — the sky, the sun and the earth. These three colors would be enough to bring the palette to 4 functional colors, but with a vibrancy that can still inspire creative play without feeling like too rigid or confining of a system. Sticking to a limited high contrast primary palette allowed for the brand and design to remain accessible and less “breakable.”
Since the rebrand Creature Learning’s client base has grown by 30%.
